Description
Old-style and fully functional reproduction of a thumb latch set with a working lock catch. Includes mounting screws. The Thumb Latch features a reversible design for use of left- or right-hand doors .75″ to 1 ½” thick.
Note: Generally used on an in-swing door so that the thumb bar is on the outside and the lock is on the inside. Can be used on an out-swing door but the thumb bar will be on the inside and the lock will be on the outside. Out-swing doors are not very common in residential construction but often used for closets.

Required some work to make it fit. Some of the holes were not large enough to fit the screws and some burrs needed to be filed off. Once installed, it works well though.

The castings are sloppy and a little on the thin side. I had to grind down a section of the rod and chisel out the top and bottom of the door hole so it would sit level through the door. The latch mechanism is too loose to sit as shown in the catalog photos; mine sits down on the handle bar. Luckily I bought a few kits because the first one wasn’t sloppy enough to entirely lay on the handle and would bind the latch in the open position. I mistakenly tried to bend the piece back but it broke. If this happens to you, ream out the lock so it hangs further out without binding rather than trying to match the catalog photo. Instructions are poorly written and printed; a schematic was so light as to be illegible so the plan on a test installation in some scrap wood first.

This appears to be a quality piece and the installation was straightforward the issue I have with this product is the description of the factory finish on the piece which is followed by “it is not suitable for exterior use”. Funny, I always thought a screen door was on the exterior of a house…

The description doesn’t tell that you need a 4-in wide piece of wood for the latch. I have a screen door with a wood frame is much smaller. Hence the latch doesn’t fit. So I had to 3D print the base part of the latch and make the corrections to allow it to fit properly. For the right door I’m sure this latch works well. There were some spots on the latch that were poorly lacquered. I’ll keep using this.
